Governor Walker Recall

Wisconsin has a long and proud legacy of protecting our environment.  For the past 10 months, that proud legacy has been under full scale assault by Governor Scott Walker.  That is why the John Muir Chapter’s Executive Committee has voted unanimously to endorse the recall of Gov. Walker and to ask Sierra Club members to help in the effort.   Click here to see all the details you need on Walker's attacks on the environment.  Unfortunately, many of his bad environmental policies are also job killers, making the need for this recall even more urgent.

Consider what Scott Walker has done to date:

  • Has effectively stopped all new wind energy projects in the state
  • Cut funding for the Gaylord Nelson – Warren Knowles Stewardship Funding by 30%
  • Undermined Wisconsin nationally recognized energy conservation program
  • Abolished the state Office of Energy Independence
  • Carved out a special exemption from wetlands protections for a campaign contributor    Eliminated the requirement that municipal water supplies be disinfected
  • Called a special session for the purpose of passing legislation to roll back water pollution and wetlands law                                                                     .
  • Appointed as DNR Secretary as state Senator with one of the worst environment voting records in the Legislature.
  • Sought to severely weaken mining laws to benefit an Appalachian mining company that want to build a massive strip mine in our north woods.

Sierra Club members collected over 5,000 siganatures to Recall Walker.   While there are many reasons to recall Walker, his attack on environmental protection would surely be reason enough.

If we just sit by and watch, Wisconsin will be a very different place.  A place where our natural resources have scant protection – where pollution is allowed and the North Woods are handed over to a strip mining corporation – where any efforts to reduce our dependence on coal and oil are stifled.

Our best, and very possibly only, chance to stop this onslaught on environmental protectionis to help recall Scott Walker and Rebecca Kleefisch.

Sierra Club Has Endorsed Tom Barrett!

The Sierra Club strongly supports Tom Barrett’s plan to put Wisconsin back to work by investing in clean energy jobs.  As Mayor, he has a strong record of attracting clean energy businesses like Ingeteam and Helios to Milwaukee County.  His forward-thinking policies will help clean up Wisconsin’s air, reduce the billions we send out-of-state each year to pay for fossil fuels, and put our state back to work.

Barrett’s support for mass transit has earned him the support of the ATU Local 998.  He will end Governor Walker’s war on renewable energy and high speed rail that contributed to Wisconsin losing more jobs than any other state in 2011.  His strong support for education will ensure that our workers have the knowledge and expertise needed to excel in the high tech careers of the future.

Tom Barrett is a strong supporter of the Great Lakes Compact and for increased water protection and habitat restoration, including banning gas and oil drilling in the Great Lakes.  His record contrasts sharply with that of Governor Walker, who appointed a former lawmaker with a 29% conservation voting record as DNR Secretary.  Actions to enforce laws designed to protect natural resources have dropped to the lowest levels in over a decade under Secretary Stepp, exemplified by the recent discovery that DNR failed to prosecute a campaign donor who endangered drinking water by spreading dangerous levels of human sewage on farm fields.

Sierra Club Endorses Lori Compas (SD 13) , Kristin Dexter (SD 23), John Lehman (SD 21), and Donna Seidel (SD 29)!

Sierra Club has also endorsed Lori Compas, Kristin Dexter, John Lehman, and Donna Seidel for Senate.
