Lois Norrgard of the Alaska Coalition will speak to Sierrans about the history, the place, the wildlife and flora. and other intrinsic values of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. She will review the tumultuous record of the fight to protect this last pristine chunk of North America from the tender mercies of the Oil Industry in it's
pursuit of a very short term economic gain. Ms. Norrgard is the Upper Midwest Regional Organizer for the Coalition and is based in the Twin Cities. The Coalition includes over 1000 religious, sporting, conservation, business and labor groups joined to protect public lands in Alaska. .
The organization formed in 1970 to advocate for National Parks, wildlife refuges, wilderness areas and wild rivers during the period in the '70's when Alaska's public lands were being divided. It played a key role in capturing over 100 million acres for parks and refuges through its advocacy for the Alaska Public Interest Land Conservation Act passed by Congress in 1980.
Meet our speaker Lois at Stella Blue's, 306 E. Madison, where we will gather for dinner at 5:30. The program is at 7:30 in the Commons of North Star Middle School, 2711 Abbe Hill Drive.
