Solstice Canoe Outing • Wednesday, June
18
Canoe or kayak the Chippewa River. Contact Renee Ebel for times
and information.
Big
Changes for Solstice 2008!
All paddlers
and bikers will leave from the Anson boat landing
just south of Jim Falls . This year to save on
petrol - and time, we will not have a shuttle (in and
out at the same location), but instead a gentle upstream
paddle one way. Be ready to launch and bike at
6 PM, Wed. June 18 (rain date June 25). Curt
is planning a wonderful biking route....and the paddle
will head south on one shore of the beautiful Chippewa
River , and back north on the other. Just
think, no sunset in your paddling eyes and no
very steep hill at the take out! Then we will enjoy $1
burgers at the Old Abe Supper Club. The burgers on
Wed are a buck....you can add salad bar for about $3 or
$4.....and it's hard to estimate the beer bill. Just
remember they don't accept credit cards. Cash and
checks only. I called them and they are ready for
us!
For
the start....if you are coming from EC, take Hwy 53 north
to county highway S exit. (If you are traveling from
north of CF, take S exit as well, but turn left at the
exit then follow the directions.) Turn right on S
and follow it east and then north....it will turn north
all by itself. As you near Jim Falls, turn left at
189th - Anson Park (the park and 189th are located about 1
mile south of Jim Falls, right across S from the bleachers
for the tractor pull).....the boat landing is a ¼ mile
south on the right. Curt would like the
bikers to meet at the Anson Town Park right on S rather
than going to the landing.
Directions
to Old Abe & $1 burgers: North from Anson Town
Park on S, which becomes Y when you reach the bridge over
the Chippewa. Follow Y (left turn at the end of the
bridge), south until you see another sign showing Y
turning right. In about 1/2 mile from that turn Y
turns left, but you want to go straight on 175th.
Old Abe is 1 & 1/4 mile on the right. (You do
pass a "dead end" street at about 1 mile, but
turn with the road instead). Don't forget, no credit
cards....cash or check.
·
Leaving
Old Abe, retrace your steps back to 178, then turn right
and head south to S (don't go back to Jim Falls)....right
to 53.
I
think this will be a fun trip, time for a change of
scenery! Thanks to Curt for agreeing to captain the
bike ride. Don't forget, rain date is one week
later....'cause the buck burgers are only on Wed night!
Print these directions off..... I did bike up there to
verify the Gazetteer is correct. I will take my cell
along....number below. See you then!

RSVP Please
While we don't require an RSVP
for many outings (for some they are required), we recommend that
you let the outing leader know that you'd like to join in on the
activity ahead of time. Our volunteer leaders enjoy the
opportunity to share outings with fellow Sierra Club members and
the community at large. Giving the outing leader a heads-up that
you would like to join in lets them plan a little better and
make your experience more enjoyable. It also offers them the
opportunity to contact you if plans change.
Outings:
Liability Waiver & Carpooling…
In
order to participate on one of the Sierra Club's outings, you
will need to sign a liability waiver. If you would like to read
a copy of the waiver prior to the outing, please see the
John Muir Chapter's web site.
In the
interests of facilitating the logistics of some outings, it is
customary that participants make carpooling arrangements. The
Sierra Club does not have insurance for carpooling arrangements
and assumes no liability for them. Carpooling, ride sharing or
anything similar is strictly a private arrangement among the
participants. Participants assume the risks associated with this
travel.
