It is
important for a conservation organization like the Sierra Club
to focus on specific issues. By having national, state and
local entities working in conjunction, we can best attack
local and regional issues with our grassroots activism. You
can energize our efforts! If you would like to be involved,

Clean Water -
What could be more important than clean water?
We have a Water Monitoring Program in WI
at the Coulee Region Group near La Crosse. Danny, Rick
and four others have been trained in our area under the WAV
(Water Action Volunteers) program via the UW-Ext system. We are
the WI Water Sentinels (a program under the National Sierra
Club) as the first group in Wisconsin and have water equipment
and supplies for our volunteers.
We have identified new monitoring
locations for 2009. Free Training available in via new DVD!

details.

We have equipment for our volunteers and will do training as
needed. HACH equipment is easy to use and accurate - our
primary choice. We are measuring 6 different items for WAV and
now 6 more tests for Water Sentinels on our local streams and
rivers. We have Phosphate, Nitrate and Dissolved Oxygen kits.
We are also paying for some Ecoli tests for human and animal
waste bacteria testing.
We do seasonal monthly tests and reports.
We'd like to do more as new areas and volunteers become
interested.
Want to get
involved?
We are always collecting names for Water
Monitor Volunteers. We have river/creek maps and are looking to
spread out in our area and help train future WI groups as they
get interested. If you live near a stream or creek and will
make every effort to commit to a year of water monitoring
support - we'd love to have you. Once approved, we will train
you and supply you with testing equipment, paperwork, long term
help and additional volunteers. We'd like 2 separate
individuals per site - a primary and backup so that training can
continue seamlessly as time passes. :)
This is important baseline work and data
can be entered into several sites including WAV and at our
National Database system. Another database is being designed in
Missouri and our leaders are meeting other states to learn more
from existing setups and ready to apply for a QAPP EPA
standardization.
