Robinson Trip Report / Pictures
Phil Johnsrud's April 1-2, 2000 Robinson, Morrison & Halls
Trip
A large group of about 25 paddlers met to paddle these small creeks
that
usually have enough water in them only in early spring.
On Saturday we had perfect weather to paddle the Robinson -- mostly
sunny skies and temperatures around 60 degrees. Water levels were a
bit
low, given the dry winter and spring, but that didn't hamper our fun.
The Robinson is a lovely narrow winding stream with several spots of
fast water, a few small drops, and one ledge. It also featured several
spectacular logjams that gave us a little portaging practice! But we
all
worked together and got around these without a problem.
Of special note on Saturday were the lunch spot (where we all enjoyed
soaking in the sun), the late afternoon appearance of some low-flying
jets on maneuvers, and Phil's birthday dinner -- what a way to spend
a
birthday!
On Sunday we all met at the put-in for the Morrison and found water
levels too low to paddle. A last-minute substitution was made, and
we
headed for the Black River. Once again, we had perfect weather -- except
for the wind. The wide expanse of the Black gave the wind plenty of
room
to pick up speed, making our paddle quite a challenge at times.
But it was still an amazing day! There was great paddling with many
extensive rapids and one ledge, a gorgeous shoreline with dramatic
rock
outcroppings and early spring greenery, bald eagles flying and in the
nest, sandhill cranes returning to their summer home, a sunny pebble
beach lunch spot, and, as always, great paddling friends and
camaraderie.
Thanks to Phil and everyone on the trip for another wonderful weekend!
