What is Weed Out! Racine? |
Weed Out! Racine is a volunteer program that aims to maintain the biodiversity of our public spaces and native areas by stopping the spread of invasive species. We work in coordination with the City of Racine Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services.
Some non-native plants grow abundantly here, unchecked by insects or diseases that would have kept their growth in balance in their original ecosystem. They outcompete native plants, and reduce their populations. This in turn results in loss of native insects, mammals and birds, reducing the biodiversity of our native woodlands, prairies and wetlands. In order to maintain healthy ecosystems, we need to maintain biodiversity. Volunteers will gather at various sites on Saturdays in March, April, and May (click here for dates) to pull garlic mustard and/or dame's rocket and to pull or cut buckthorn and honeysuckle. The actual task will depend on the site and the date. Brush will be piled for chipping and weeds will be bagged for proper disposal by the City of Racine.
